CMR Could Lose One Really Close to Home.

I was all set to call it an evening so far as blogging is concerned. Then I saw this in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Coach Richt's son Jon, a rising junior quarterback at Prince Avenue Christian in Athens, has been offered a scholarship: by Clemson.

I can already hear many of you laughing at Tommy Bowden's hubris. And believe me, I know how you feel. I've laughed at Tommy Bowden many times myself (not as many times as I've laughed at Jeff Bowden mind you, but I digress). This time however it bears mentioning that Clem's sons might have a shot. Coach Richt has said that he's not sure coaching his own son would be a healthy situation.

I'm inclined to agree. It's bad enough when your kid has the chance to play any other position on the field. But quarterback is a different position. It's hard to imagine a more damned if you do/damned if you don't scenario than a quarterback battle in which the head coach's son is involved. Of course, it appears that just such a scenarion will be playing out at Colorado over the next couple of years as former Boise State Head Coach/Zen Master/Dan Hawkins will have his son/Reality-TV star Cody playing for him. I can't imagine this is a good idea.

"Read the Sam Linebacker you must. Learn the ways of the spread-option, you will."

-----Coach Dan Hawkins

I haven't had a chance to see young Richt play, but I've heard that he's a pretty good young signal caller, smallish but growing, and with a decent arm. Coach Richt, asked to scout his son, said that he certainly doesn't have the speed to make coaches script him into the running game. So, he's not the next coming of Michael Vick, but as a coach's kid (and especially this coach's kid) you can bet he's not the next Marcus Vick, either.

I feel pretty certain that one reason Tommy Bowden is recruiting Jon Richt is that he won't be doing this. . .

Or this. Which is more than TB can say for several of his current players.

I congratulate John Richt on his offer from Clemson, I'm sure it won't be the last. That said, I hope that by this time next year he grows into one of the best high school quarterbacks in America. I also hope that he doesn't receive and accept a scholarship from a school that will actually be on our schedule in 2008-2012. If you think the annual "Bowden Bowl" schlock-fest is bad, imagine what would happen if Jon Richt were quarterbacking Auburn against his Dad in the SEC Championship game. It could make CBS's incessant "David Greene and David Pollack are best friends" storyline seem refreshing and original. Good luck Jon, DawgNation is pulling for you to find your place in the world. So long as it's not at the North Avenue Trade School.
